Luis Gouveia — Naval Engineer and director of B&G Yacht Design

Luis Gouveia, B&G Yacht Design

A young man builds his boat with his own hands and sets sail around the world.

A young couple, full of courage, determination, and dreams, but lacking resources, set sail without a fixed destination, certain that they will pass through incredible places on a trip that every cruising sailor says they will one day take.

A delightful journey through the enchanting atolls and islands of the Pacific, with all the ingredients of adventure, discovery, and some expected and unexpected challenges.

The accounts of a crew member who rose to the rank of captain of one of the ships belonging to a renowned non-governmental environmental protection organization, involved in campaigns against the predatory hunting of whales in the Southern and Antarctic Oceans.

Each of these topics, separately or combined, has already been used and forms the creative basis for books on sailing, cruising, and Antarctic adventures, leading thousands of people to approach cruising, learn to sail, and embark on their own adventures.

Luis Manuel Pinho lived this nomadic life intensely for over 25 years and offers us in this book an entertaining, exciting, and human account of his travels and adventures. A book that should occupy a special place in many onboard libraries of sailing enthusiasts.”

An unusual life, full of adventures and courage to expose one's own vulnerability. Many of us can't even imagine what it would be like to realize our greatest dreams by facing the fear of failure head-on. Sailing the seas, risking one's own life to protect everyone's heritage, exploring the world and human nature in all its depth. This is the story of a navigator who sailed the world, faced the icy seas of Antarctica and the whalers who killed in a sanctuary, built boats that, in addition to being ocean-going vessels, were his own home, and forged lasting friendships even at a distance, like mine.

I met Luis in Vanuatu, one of my favorite places in the world, many years ago. At the time, we were sailing around the world, living a simple life, almost entirely subsistence-based. Luis was already an experienced sailor and generous in sharing his experience with everyone. I remember how much he loved building sailboats, which later became a much bigger project.

To my surprise, years later I also found Luís involved in environmental activism, with Sea Shepherd, an organization I was already a part of before sailing. In this context as well, Luís always proved to be generous and wise, even in the most difficult and complicated missions. A skilled and important Captain for all the success in protecting the marine ecosystem and our crews.

At the beginning of 2021, I contacted the engineer Luis Manuel to build a sailboat to sail around the world. I was just another typical dreamer, and my experience was limited to a few hours on board. The conversation went well, and shortly after, we set sail for five days in the bay of Ilha Grande on a sailboat designed by him (a Pop Alu 32).

They say the sea quickly strips people bare. True. There I met Captain Luis, serious, humble, honest, kind, funny, technically skilled, and an inexhaustible source of stories. Or should I say stories?

I confess that I was skeptical – and still am – of what he told me about his 25 years of travels through the Pacific and Antarctic. The places, people, and situations were so incredible that my limited creativity could never have included them in my dream of traveling around the world, but they were confirmed by the people he introduced me to along the way.

Now, after reading the book, I see that the accounts are not real. The book is the fruit of a dream he lived intensely, and it will certainly inspire so many other dreamers to move forward.
